Mr. Holland's Opus

Once upon a time .... men who were high school teachers always wore a suit and tie. Women teachers wore a dress and high heels.

When I saw the 1995 movie Mr. Holland's Opus I was transported back to my days at a small high school in Iowa. Our band teacher always wore a suit and tie. Always.

I remember taking private lessons from my band teacher. He had the patience of Job. Maybe more actually.

If you think about, elementary and high school teachers really have an impact on a lot of people. If a person teaches for 30 years and interacts with, say, 200 students a year, well that is 6,000 people. In reality, a teacher probably interacts with a lot more that. Regardless, most of us can remember the names of various teachers we had in school.

They touched our lives and helped form us into the people we are today.

I like Mr. Holland's Opus for lots of reasons. Seeing Richard Dreyfuss's character evolve from a young man to an older teacher is realistic. I love Olympia Dukakis's role as the high school principal. She saw something in Mr. Holland. She believed in him. She made him believe in himself.

If you haven't seen this movie, see it. If you have seen it, see it again. Some things in life are worth doing again.

I haven't seen this movie in years, but maybe I'll take another look at it. I remember enjoying it so much before and I'm sure I will again! :D

I have a few teachers who really made a difference in my life. One actually pointed out to me that I was smart and capable. She insisted that I be in her Advanced Placement class. She really changed the way I looked at school. My family expected me to be a wife and mother, so did not stress the need for me to have a good education. My son just mentioned that he wanted to go back to his old middle school and bring flowers to a teacher who really influenced him. Nice Post. I love this movie

Teachers make an impact sometimes positive and sometimes negative. In either case they are remembered. Only the bland are forgotten.

I went to rent a movie the other day, and was trying to decide Mr. Holland's Opus, which I have seen several times, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, which is the one I ended up choosing. That was also good, but now you have reminded me that I really loved Mr. Holland, so guess that one will be next.

And, yes, I have a teacher who greatly influenced my life. We are no longer teacher and student, but are now dear friends. He continues to influence my life!

Mr. Holland's Opus is one of my favorite movies. It's wonderful.

I remember when I was in grade four, we had an influx of teachers from Great Britain. The first thing I noticed about them was their tweed suits with elbow patches. Canadian teachers wore regular wool suits. And the British teachers insisted we call them "Sir" rather than "Mr. Smith" or "Mr. Jones". It was strange and very formal, and I quite liked it. The British teachers turned out to be the best teachers, and the ones who made the most impact on me.
