New Kittens

Late this summer a new cat showed up in my barn. She was a nice cat and I called her Penney Lane. I could tell Penney Lane was quite pregnant and figured someone may have abandoned her.

It was not long after she had kittens. But I could not find them. I heard them every so often but Penney Lane would move them if she thought I was getting close. After a while I never heard the kittens and figured they had died. I thought the little young mother cat probably just did not know what to do.

But I was wrong. One day about two weeks ago I saw this kitten looking back at me.

And then I saw this one.

And then a third one.

Penney Lane cat turned out to be an excellent mother. But I thought it would be good to get them some food just to make sure.

They liked it. The kittens were big enough to eat. In fact, they really seemed to enjoy the meal.

But Penney Lane figured her kittens need to know how to hunt and survive on their own. She brought in a mouse and they all ate it. Then she brought in a bird and they ate that.

Then she brought in a .... squirrel. And they ate that!

So now I am working to make sure the barn will stay as warm as possible when the cold weather arrives. And as I work away I enjoy watching kittens being kittens.

Each one has its own personality. The black and white one is by far the most playful. He likes jumping on this rope and swinging back and forth.

Or batting his mother's tail.

Thanks for stopping by.

They're just adorable. And Penny Lane looks rather young herself.

I've always had a theory about the behaviour of black and white cats which tend to be a lot more rambunctious than other cats. I believed them to be a little bit crazy.. manic maybe. I noticed this extra energy in about 90% of the black cats I've known through the years.

Recently though, someone who observed pretty much the same thing in her years with cats, suggested that black and white cats are actually significantly more intelligent than the rest. They figure things out much earlier and probe farther than the rest so they appear to be getting into more trouble and being more disruptive. I kind of think that's a good likelihood.

In any event, they're all a lot of fun to watch. Thanks for sharing these cutie pies. Enjoy them.

They are all so wonderful. The mother acted like the perfect farm cat like the ones we had when I was a kid. Bringing in things that she had killed for them to eat. They look like a lot of fun and I know you are glad you took her in to help her.

You have, without a doubt, the world's most purrrrrfect kittens. They're bright, healthy, and very, very (!!!) beautiful.

I used to have a black and white cat who loved swinging on the living room pictures. Back and forth ... back and forth. She also played the piano in the middle of the night.

She was full of beans and lived to be 22 years old.

Ahhh there is nothing like the sweet and earnest look of baby kittens. So trusting.
Enjoy them as you work around the place.
Mama is doing a good job.

PS. I hope you catch Penney Lane and have her spayed.
That is my soapbox theme always. MB

Oh Gosh! They are adorable!
I don;t know which one I love the most.
I think the black one with the white lip but I also have always been a tabby girl.
The first picture is like a carbon copy of Mama.
You are so nice to be able to keep them I hope they become tame soon so you can play with them and hold them before they grow up.
