In 1973 I graduated from high school. That was the same year Art Garfunkel released a Jimmy Webb song called That's All I know.
I always liked Simon and Garfunkel. I felt bad when they went their separate ways.
But I had to admit this song as sung by Art Garkunkel was touching. The lyrics are simple. "I love you and that's all I know." That pretty much says it all doesn't it?
The truly poignant line is "... endings come too fast but they pass so slow ...." You can hear the pain in this song. I suppose a lot of songs and poems are inspired by the pain of loss.
When that 1973 song was released, Simon and Garfunkel had already known each other for about 20 years. They knew each other as children and started singing together very young.
Here they are in 2009 -- over 50 years later from when they started.
The song seems reflective of their relationship in some respects. Or maybe, more accurately, it is how we viewed them. I cannot think of a more powerful group that represents so much of the feeling of the era in which so many of us grew up.
