Hannah and Her Sisters

The other day I put up a post about the movie Defiance. Though a good movie it is not a fun movie to watch.

On the other "Hannah" (?!) a VERY fun movie to watch is Hannah and Her Sisters.

This is considered by many to be Woody Allen's best movie. I had not seen it until last night. Heck, it's only been out since ... 1986. But it is classic Woody Allen at his best.

The story begins with a family Thanksgiving and ends two years later.

As you can tell from the title, the central characters are the three sisters. Hannah is played by Mia Farrow and is Woody Allen's character's ex-wife. Holly is played by Dianne Wiest and sister Lee is played by Barbara Hershey.

Carrie Fisher has a rather small role as a friend of Holly's. The two of them have a catering business but the business does not last very long. Then again, Holly plays a character who has some major problems.

Michael Cain's character thinks he is in love with Lee and that is a major part of the story.

And, as always, Woody Allen's character is a huge hypochondriac and believes he is facing imminent death. He questions the existence of God and explores various religions trying to find answers to life's big questions. In this scene he is considering joining the Hare Krishnas.

Some interesting tidbits: Michael Cain and Dianne Wiest each won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor / Actress. The next time two supporting actors in the same movie would win Oscars would be in 2011 (The Fighter).

Maureen O'Sullivan plays the sister's mother. In real life she is Mia Farrow's mother. Lloyd Nolan played the father of the sisters. This was his last movie as he died in 1985.

Thanks for stopping by. It is supposed to rain in Iowa this weekend. Maybe I will go see a movie ... that is not 25 years old!

this one does look like a fun movie. I may watch it. I wouldn't watch Defiance. I like happy movies.

lol Sometimes the old movies are still the best.
We saw Woody with his adopted daughter, who he left Mia for, at the Cannes Festival and one wonders why?

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I'm glad you watched it and apparently enjoyed it. Thanks for the info on the movie. I never knew Maureen O'Sullivan was Mia Farrow's mom - very interesting.
