Desperado

In 1973 I was a senior in high school. I remember that year very well for many reasons.

I had a 1963 Chevy SS Impala. It was red with a white top and black interior. I would never have a car I liked more than that one.



It was a time when girls basketball in Iowa was more popular than boys basketball. The girls played a 6 on 6 game (3 players on each side of the time line) and scores were usually something like 86 to 79. High scoring games since it was really a 3 on 3 game.

A few years earlier Denise Long scored 93 points in one game during the state tournament and she was later drafted by an NBA team. Tickets for the tournament were hard to get and Sports Illustrated always did a big story on it.



One thing I really remember is an Album released by the Eagles called Desperado.



For some reason I was attracted to music that had a country western flavor to it but was not really country western (does that makes sense?). I liked the Pure Prairie League a lot.



The Allman Brothers came out with a song called Ramblin Man. Every time I hear that song I think of college dorms. It seemed to be playing in every room.



Linda Ronstadt made a very popular recording of Desperado. Keep in mind that the Eagles had been her warm up band before they became famous.



Still, Desperado is the Eagles' song. Like most originals, it belongs to them.

The song is about a cowboy who is a loner and is getting older. He seems to only want things he can't have. Maybe there is a message there. I don't know.

I do like the final passage of the song: "You better let somebody love you ... before it's too late ..."
